According to his own account, Fred Gerling Came to America aboard the ship Orpheus at age 15 from Prussia, His home town Hille (near Minden, Germany).

"Another German lad, about the same age, made the journey with him. From New York City, they went at once to Two Rivers, Wisconsin, where they had friends and relatives. His chum, named Vondehee, had an elder brother (Christian Frederick Von der Ahe) who had made his way to the Oregon country two or three years before."

Gerling-Fred W age 95 years, late of 8005 SE Clay, beloved father of Edward and Ernest Gerling of Portland, William Walter Gerling of Boise, Idaho, Mrs. Lincoln Huot of Goodnoe Hills, Washington; also survived by 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday Sept 9 at 2 p.m. at The Chapel of Jacobson Co. SE Foster Road and 91st St Ave. Internment Lincoln Memorial Park. Goldendale papers please copy.
