Dorothea (Dora) Wiegand was born in Niederasphe, Marburg-Biedenkopf, Hesse, Germany. According to church records there her birth date was 1 August, 1845 [her headstone says 1844]. In 1857 her family left for America, and arrived In Baltimore on the ship Johanne Wilhelmine in October of that year. She was accompanied by her parents, her brother Heinrich, and her sister Katherina. The family eventually settled in Reading, Pennsylvania. Dora had an additional 6 sisters born in America to her parents, with 5 of those surviving to adulthood.
Dora married Phillip Rapp on April 17, 1863 at St. Johns Lutheran church in Reading. They had 3 sons, but only Nicholas survived to adulthood. They also had 8 daughters, of which 5 survived to adulthood.
