Bernie U. Markham, 79, retired area farmer, died Saturday at the Pine Haven Nursing Home in Pine Island, where he had been a resident since February.
He was born Nov. 16, 1889 in South Dakota and was married to the former Mabel Stoppel on Nov. 29, 1917 in Byron.
The couple farmed in the Stewartville and Marion Township areas prior to moving to the Oronoco area in 1938. They then moved into the Village of Oronoco in 1951 after retiring as farmers.
He was member of the Masonic Lodge for 58 years.
Surviving are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Gaylord(Doris) Kautz of Oronoco; six sons, Henry, Vernon, Leonard and William of Oronoco, Bernard of Rochester, and Leon of Pine Island; 22 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; two brothers, George and Robert of Stewartville; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Finley of Chatfield and Mrs. Marjorie Scott of Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mahler Funeral Home in Pine Island with the Rev. Noel Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester. Friends may call at the funeral home today and until the time of services Tuesday.
Pallbearers will be Ben Wittlief, Harry Stolp, Cyril Koenig. Clifford Ritter, Ervin Mohlke and Carl Culver.
