William Markham, World War Veteran Buried Wednesday Local Legion Post Officiates at the Funeral Services in the Cass Cemetery

Funeral Services for William Cyrus Markham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Markham, of Stewartville, Minnesota, and husband of Mrs. Bernice Littleford Markham, of Grove Street, were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Methodist Episcopal Church. The Rev. Quincy R. Wright, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. A. S. Phelps, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiated and burial was made at the Cass Cemetery. Members of the Alexander Bradley Burns Post, American, gave the last rites at the grave for one who has served his country. The regulation three volleys and the blowing of taps by Bugler Johnson told that another boy who served his country has answered the last call.

William Markham was born October 31 1892, at Eyota, Minn. He spent his boyhood at Stewartville, Minn. and graduated from the high school there in 1916 as Valedictorian of his class. He has a natural talent for teaching and spent several years doing that work in South Dakota. Later he studied for a degree in the University. During the trying days of the war he was stationed at Camp Grant and while there he contracted flu during the epidemic. He never entirely recovered his health. During the past six months he has been a patient in various hospitals and when taken suddenly with throat trouble last Sunday he was rushed to the government hospital at Maywood where he passed away Monday, May 25.

He leaves to mourn his loss his widow, his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Markham, of Stewartville, Minn,; three sisters, Mrs. Walter Finley, of Chatfield, Minn., Mrs. Winfield Scott, of St. Paul, and Mrs. O. Davidson of Spring Valley, Minn.,; three brothers, George of Oronoco, Minn., and Bernie and Robert, of Stewartville, Minn.
