RITES FOR WELL KNOWN RODEO
PRODUCER HELD

Jake Beutler, nationally known as one of the Beutler Brothers Redeo Producers died March 23, in Tucson, Ariz., following major surgery.

Jake was one of the famed Beutler trio that started the nationally known rodeo producing association in 1929 and was known for his care of the stock and trucking portion of the rodeo business.

The Beutler Brothers -- Elra, Jake and Lynn -- are the sons of the late John N. and Maggie Beutler. The Beutlers' father made the run of 1889 from Guthrie and homesteaded north of El Reno at Okarche. The family moved to the Carpenter community northeast of Elk City in 1905 where Mr. Beutler bought and sold livestock and farmed. His sons had the job of trailing the stock to and from the home place.

In 1929 Mr. Beutler bought what he thought were 10 gentle horses and discovered after he got them that they were real buckers. Money was scarce during the depression so the family decided to try to do something with the onery(sic) animals.

The brothers heard about a rodeo in Clinton so they leased the animals to the rodeo. They had to drive the horses over and back, all for $150.

It wasn't long before El Reno rodeo promoters asked the boys to bring the horses to their show and the Beutler Brothers were in the rodeo business.

Elra, Jake and Lynn worked together until 1954 when the two younger brothers Jake and Lynn bought out Elra. They later bought out 10 other competitors by "Topping their strings" (buying out their best animals) and thus became one of the largest rodeo producing firms in the world.

Lynn and Jake sold out their rodeo firm in November of 1967 to Harry Vold of Ponoka, Canada, and Mike Cervl of Sterling, Colo

The men have received many honors throughout the nation and in western Oklahoma. Their most recent recoginition(sic) came in November of 1974 when they were inducted into the Western Oklahoma Historical Society Hall of Fame. A room in the Old Town Museum is also named for the trio and featured many souvenirs of the rodeo trade.

Jake was a life member of the National Rodeo Association.

Survivors include his wife Margaret of the home; 1 son Alan of La.; 3 brothers, Elra, Lynn and Denzil, all of Elk City; 5 sisters including Mrs. T. M. Hebron, Elk City; and 2 grandchildren.
