Family story: as an Irishman, Joseph was jokingly hassled by family over the fact that he happened to be born in Scotland. His retort to the assertion that he was actually Scottish was, "And I suppose if a cat had kittens in the oven, they'd be biscuits?"

Joseph was said to have a drinking problem, and the resultant family hardships were cause for his son John to swear off any drinking for all of his life.
