Katherine was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and lived in the immediate area for almost all of her life. At age 15 she lost her left arm in an accident while working at Munger's Laundry in Des Moines. She was compensated $400 and used this money to buy a piano. Though she was left-handed, she learned to do everything with her right hand and was as capable with one hand as most people are with two.

Katherine married Charles Witham at age 17 in 1908, and in 1909 they had a daughter, also named Katherine. This child died in a fire in 1913. While she was pregnant with their 4th child the following year, Katherine and Charles Witham divorced. Katherine married Charles H. May before the birth in 1915, and her 4th child was named Harrison May. Nine more children followed over the next 16 years.

The May family lived outside the Des Moines vicinity for a time in the 1920s, and in 1928 Harrison was killed in a school bus/train collision near Marble Rock. By 1930 the family was back in Des Moines. From 1944 to early 1951 the family lived on a farm on what is now Douglas Parkway, just outside of Polk County near Waukee.

After the death of her husband in late 1951, she lived in Des Moines with her youngest son, until her passing in 1964.
