Josephine grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and married her husband George there in 1900. They moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1902, then to Minnesota in 1914 and finally to Chicago, Illinois by 1920, where she helped her husband run the Fairchild Garage, an auto garaging and repair business. She was known by nieces and nephews as "Aunt Joe" as she preferred to use her middle name over her first.
