Mrs. Fern Cleo Tonkin, 89, of 2 Bull Run St., Coaldale, died Thursday in St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale. She was the widow of Harold Tonkin who died in 1962.

Prior to retiring, she had been employed in the garment industry, working 22 years at Kiddie Clothes, Lansford, and factories in Seek and Brockton.

Born in Tamaqua, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Catherine (Scheidegger) Krapf.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tamaqua.

A lifelong Republican, she was an election poll worker for 35 years.

Surviving are a son, John and his wife, Kathy, of Coaldale; a daughter, Sandra, wife of C.C. Simmons of Coaldale; a companion, Charles Sharpe; three brothers, Paul of Allentown, George and his wife, Carol, of Baltimore, Md., and Donald and his wife, Marian, of Tamaqua; two sisters, Claire Hollenbach of Tamaqua and Regina Evans of McAdoo; six grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Albert, Calvin, Elwood and Robert; four sisters, Louise Light, Nellie Stramara, Naomi Barron and Catherine Dudeck; and a granddaughter, Jaclyn Ann Simmons.

The August M. Gulla Funeral Home, 130 E. Ridge St., Coaldale, is in charge of arrangements.
