Jurist, Civil Rights Figure. While serving as a United States Federal District Judge from 1946 to 1973, he made several key Civil Rights legal rulings. In 1963 he prohibited Alabama Governor George C. Wallace from barring two African-American students from attending the University of Alabama, and in 1969 ruled to prohibit maintaining segregated eating, bathing and recreational facilities by employees in the precedent setting case of "Pettway vs. American Cast Iron Pipe”. In 1995, the United States Congress named the federal building in Decatur, Alabama for him. During World War II he served in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, and received a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service.
