Bill was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment during WW II. Landing at Normandy on 9 Aug 44 they became the covering force for General Patton's Third Army.They participated in the Battle of the Bulge and subsequently crossed the Rhine into Germany on 29 Mar 45. The unit liberated a concentration camp at Ebensee, Austria. Bill was wounded in the hip during combat operations and sent to a hospital in France.
During the Korean War Bill was assigned to the 27th Infantry Regiment ( the "Wolfhounds" which was a part of the 25th Infantry Division. Sent to Korea at the outbreak they helped secure and then breakout of the Pusan perimeter.The unit saw heavy combat action throughout the war and earned ten (10) campaign streamers and three (3) Presidential Unit Citations. Bill was again wounded and his leg amputated. He was decorated for bravery and had been awarded two purple hearts.
