BRUCE, ASA CLIFFORD JR.

BRUCE, Asa Clifford Jr., 79, of Lynchburg, formerly of Roanoke, died Monday, August 19, 2002. He was the husband of the late Christine Carter Bruce.

Born in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Asa Clifford Bruce and Clara Custer Bruce. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, George Melvin "Pete" Bruce, and a sister, Ruby Bruce Wilkes.

Surviving are his two daughters, Judith Bruce Campbell (W.D.) of Amherst County, and Jane Bruce Stephens (James H.) of Rio Rancho, N.M.; three grandchildren, Sarah Stephens Baran (Stanley J.) of Chandler, Ariz., Deborah Lynn Stephens and Matthew Carter Stephens of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and a sister, Elinor Bruce Webber (Frederick M.) of Vienna, Va.

Mr. Bruce graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke, and attended Georgetown University. He retired from the Social Security Administration as Assistant Manager of the Bluefield, West Virginia Office.

A retired Major, USAR, he served in the U.S. Army in the 135 th AAA Gun Battalion in Europe during World War II. His service included the repatriation of Dachau concentration camp survivors in Germany, and he attended the Nuremberg trials.

Mr. Bruce was a Master Mason in Lakeland Lodge #190 AF & AM Roanoke, and a 50-year member of the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club. Other memberships included Scottish Rite, York Rite, Knights Templar, and the Lynchburg Royal Arch Chapter. He was a Past President of the Civitan Club of Bluefield, West Virginia. Mr. Bruce was a member of First Baptist Church of Lynchburg.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, Ky. 40502.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2002, from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. John P. Campbell will officiate. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park with Masonic Rites by Lakeland Lodge #190 and military honors by the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke.
