HAMPTON — George Melvin "Pete" Bruce, 65, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000 after a courageous struggle with Alzheimer's. He was a native of Roanoke and had been a Peninsula resident since 1962. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He was a member of Monitor Lodge 197, A.F.& A.M.; and was a member and past president of the Mercury Lions Club. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding, after 28 years of service in the security department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Asa Clifford Sr. and Clara Custer Bruce; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby B. and Henry Wilkes; sister-in- law, Christine C. Bruce; and a daughter, Kathy Bruce Ellinger.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the chapel of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home by the Rev. Steven Crane. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
