Howard had a twin brother that died at birth. His sister Lily [in her autobiography "The Turning of the Tide"] describes Howard: "He was quite a character and with a few glib words and smiles could almost convince you black was white. Where Ralph [a brother] was shy and sensitive, he was just the opposite, and was always good for a story or two to entertain the folks." He served in the U.S. Navy from 3 Mar 1943 until 17 Dec 1945. He worked as a welder for U.S. Sugar. He and wife "Billie" lived most of their married life in Okeechobee, Florida. Howard died on the birth date of his sister Lily (on what would have been her 91st birthday).
