Ralph worked as a meat packer, which meant constantly going in and out of large refrigerated rooms. He came down with Bright's disease and died very young (21), and unmarried. His sister, Lily and husband Charles named their first-born son after him (Ralph Miles DeFreytas). Described by his sister Lily
as "one of those slender handsome boys with bright blue eyes, light brown hair, and was good and kind to everyone"; and also "shy and sensitive".
