Lily grew up in Upper Fairmount, Maryland. After attending high school she underwent three intensive years of training to become a nurse at the Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury, Md. In 1936 she received her diploma. In 1937 she earned her diploma and became a Registered Nurse. In 1939 she joined the Navy to become a Navy nurse. She married Charles M. DeFreytas in early 1940, and in 1943 began working at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md. when it first opened. This marriage ended in divorce in 1956. Illness forced her to retire from there in 1973. Her family and friends remembered her as a loving mother, devoted nurse, and fine Christian woman.

Lily was buried at Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, MD after her death, on 25 Nov 1977. She was later moved to the Brownsville Heights Cemetery on 02 Oct 2013.
