A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Marks Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hamlet.
He was born Jan. 1, 1932, in Scotland County, a son of the late James and Emily White Wilkes and husband of the late Elizabeth (Libby) Brown Wilkes. Mr. Wilkes was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was preceded in death by two sons, James L. Wilkes Jr., and Ronald Edward Wilkes and a granddaughter, Sheila Ann Wilkes.
Survivors: three daughters, Bonnie W. Jones of Ivor, Va., Ann W. Allan of Seven Lakes West, and Karen Crampsey of Decatur, Ala.; two sisters, Foylea McElroy, of Arab, Ala., and Bonnie Jean Thomas, of Pinebluff; one brother, Leonard Wilkes, of Wagram; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
