Gustav Adolph was born to Karl August Richter and Henrietta Christina Schön in Pommern, Prussia. He came to America with his parents; brother, Edward; sister, Agnes; uncle, Reinhard Richter; and aunt, Albertine (Rodenwald) Richter leaving the Port of Bremen, Germany and arriving on November 14, 1862 at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland. The families all settled in Jefferson County, Wisconsin for a few years and then moved to a farm near Albany, Minnesota.

Gustav married Louise Bartholomae on February 13, 1879 in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Lake Henry, Stearns, Minnesota. He was a farmer in the Albany area.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife on August 24, 1914; 3 unknown siblings in Pommern; brother, Edwin; and 3 sisters, Fransisca Emma, Christiane Marie, and Emma Franziska .

He was survived by 1 brother, Gustav Ferdinand; and 3 sisters, Agnes (August K. Koenemann), Ottilia Louise (Ernest Feierabend), and Helen (Frank Schellin). His funeral was held March 1, 1932 with burial following the service.
