Born on the family farm in Wakefield (Township) of Stearns County, MN; Franz died of influenza 14 April 1884 in Wakefield (Township), MN at age 6. He and two sisters died of the flu within a six-day period. Family history states that the parents went to town to bury one of their children; when they returned they found another had died.

NOTE: The family oral history is that Franz, Maria Katherina, and Amalia Eve died from an influenza epidemic, which was sweeping through Central Minnesota at the time.

Their deaths were never recorded in the courthouse, since before 1900, this was not a requirement. Deaths were recorded in family bible and church records.
