Novis McAlpin Jones passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2011, at Peachtree Village in Brandon, MS. at age 90. She was born on December 23, 1920 to Zollie Bill McAlpin and Pearl Rankin McAlpin in Smith County, Mississippi. Novis was a graduate of Puckett High School, Jones County Junior College, Mississippi State College for Women, and Mississippi College. She taught school for over 30 years , first at Brandon High School from 1942 to 1944 and then fourth grade at Brandon Elementary from 1955 to 1985.

Novis was a committed Christian and active in her church, first Cato Baptist Church, then First Baptist Church, Brandon, and later Brandon Baptist Church. Her hobby was gardening, and her beautiful yard on Louis Wilson Drive was enjoyed by her family and the people who passed by.

Novis was married for 54 years to Charley Wilson Jones; he died in 1998. Their children are Bruce McAlpin Jones (Sarah) of Montgomery, Alabama, Don Wilson Jones (Stephanie) of Mobile, Alabama, Charlotte Jones Mitchell (Mike) of Houston, Texas, and Philip Wright Jones (Virginia) of Cato, Mississippi. Novis is also survived by 9 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She enjoyed her family and enjoyed visiting them and working in their yards as well as having them visit her.

Novis was the oldest of seven children. She is survived by her sisters, Nevis Womack (Gaddis), Bonnie Womack, and Jean Ratliff (Willie), and by her brothers, Bill McAlpin (Dot) and Arthur McAlpin (Elsie). Her parents and her brother, L. C. McAlpin predeceased her.

Her family would like to express appreciation to her sitter, Mary Walker.

Visitation will be Monday, September 19, 2011 from 5 - 8 pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon and Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 1 – 2 pm at Brandon Baptist Church in Brandon, MS. Funeral Services are 2 pm Tuesday at Brandon Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Brandon Memorial Gardens.
