Hermina Farkas Schwartz (1886-1964), Immigrant Ancestor Devoted to Family

Hermina "Minnie" Farkas was born on November 10, 1886 in Beregszasz, Hungary (now Berehovo, Ukraine) to Moritz Farkas and Leni Kunstler Farkas. She was the second of eleven children. The family was able to afford to educate daughters as well as sons, because Moritz leased farm land and supervised farming on land owned by his wife's family. After hail storms destroyed Moritz's harvest one year, he set sail for America, followed a year later by his wife. They sent for Minnie and her siblings over the course of the next few years.

Minnie was reunited with her parents when she arrived in New York City on November 12, 1901, along with her older brother Alex and younger sisters Ella and Freda. When Moritz became a U.S. citizen in 1906, his Hungarian-born children also were naturalized.

Working for a Roth cousin who owned a necktie factory in lower Manhattan, Minnie helped to support the family while going to night school to learn English. She used her excellent sewing skills to make clothing for the family and also crocheted intricate doilies and other accessories, passing her love of needlework to future generations.

Minnie met her future husband, Tivador Theodore Schwartz (1887-1965) in a New York City deli. Despite initial opposition from her parents, the two were married on October 22, 1911. Her son Fred was born on September 24, 1912, followed by twins Dorothy and Daisy on December 4, 1919. By that time, Minnie was working alongside her husband in their small dairy store in the South Bronx. They continued to own and operate a dairy store until their retirement in 1955.

After so many years of working long hours on her feet, Minnie's health declined and she died on March 20, 1964, at the age of 77. Her husband died on May 12, 1965. They are buried next to each other in the Kossuth Association plot of Mount Hebron Cemetery in Queens, New York.
