Fred was a son of Moritz Farkas and Leni Kunstler, the 10th of their 11 children. He trained as an accountant and CPA, working for Stinson Aircraft during WWII. Later, he moved to Jackson, Michigan, where he was vice president and controller for Jacobson's Department Stores.

He married Charlotte Chapman (1904-1982) on May 13, 1930 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They had 2 children together.
