Peter Farkas, devoted brother and small businessman

Peter Farkas was born on October 15, 1894 in NagyBereg, Hungary, fourth son of Moritz Farkas and Leni Kunstler Farkas [source: WWI draft registration]. When his parents left for New York City at the turn of the 20th century, Peter and his seven siblings were left in the care of their maternal grandparents in Hungary. Once the parents were settled, they sent for their children. Peter was just 8 years old in April, 1903 when he sailed to America and passed through Ellis Island to be reunited with his parents [passenger manifest, SS Konigin Luise].

As a teenager and into his early 20s, Peter helped support the family by working as an order clerk. By the time of the World War I draft in 1917, he was a buyer of stationery for a trading company in New York City [WWI draft registration]. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 26, 1918 and was assigned to the 53d Depot Brigade until his honorable discharge on March 8, 1919, with the rank of sergeant [abstracts of WWI US military service].

After the war, Peter returned to his parents' apartment in the Bronx, New York, and worked as a clerk and a salesman. During the 1930s, Peter went into business with his older brother Julius Farkas (1892-1969), operating a small dairy store in New York City. They brought "stinky cheeses" to family gatherings in the 1930s and 1940s.

Both Peter and Julius Farkas were lifelong bachelors, known to be devoted to each other and to their siblings. They lived with their younger sister Irene for more than 25 years [WWII draft registration, US Census records, family history]. Peter died in New York City on February 18, 1961, at the age of 66 [NYC death cert #2132, US Veterans Administration]. He was buried alongside his brother Julius at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Queens, New York [Block 62, Ref. 1, sec. A-D, grave 1]. – bio written by his great-niece, Marian Wood, Nov. 2021
