Hazel was born March 14, 1923 in Logansport to Charlie and Mary Horn Matthews. She passed away Monday, September 12, 2011 in Bossier City, LA, following a lengthy illness. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and enjoyed, while able, singing in the church choir.
Hazel enjoyed a beautiful life with her husband, M.J. "Cap" Captain, until he passed away in 2006. Then, and following his death, she continued practicing the talent of being "the best cook" ever. Family events, especially Thanksgiving, were her happiest moments, when she could cook for her family. She had a shadow that followed her anywhere she went. That shadow was her "Chicken and Dumplings", for which she was famous. Her family, especially her precious grandchildren, were the loves of her life. They returned that love to their NaNa in every way they possibly could. She and her husband, "Cap" owned and operated the Display Graphics Company in Logansport, one of their projects being, designing the "T-shirts" for the River Fest in Logansport. They were also active in the Lion's Club.
Preceding Hazel in death were, her parents and her husband; sisters, Opal Roberts and Tene Creighton; brothers, Ralph, Artis, Herbert and Imri Matthews.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Frank "Corkey" Straton III and wife, Debbie; daughters, Mary Lou Bernard and husband, Danny and Elizabeth Ann Speights; sisters, Exa Doss, Jan Miller, and Ginger Young; brothers, Darrell and Bobby Matthews; eight grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
