Earl Whittington was born to Rufus B. and Amanda (Culvahouse) Whittington, in Kilgore, Texas. He was the youngest of 6 children, all boys: Jesse, Howard, Robert, Homer, Ralph, and Earl.

I know little about Earl's early life except that his father was a farmer in 1920 per the US Census and the family seems to have moved around the country based on the children's birthplaces: the 4 oldest were born in Oklahoma (approximately 1898 - 1904), the next in Idaho in 1906, and Earl in Texas in 1913.

I've located only one entry for Earl prior to living in California and that is in the 1931 Amarillo, Texas City Directory. An Earl Whittington is listed living on Buchanan street and working as a Dishwasher at the Why Not Eat Cafe. Sounds feasible it is him.

Earl's Death Certificate states he had lived in California and in Los Angeles County for 30 years at the time of his death. This sounds right as by 1940 Earl has married my aunt, Martha Elizabeth Edwards, and they have just had a daughter, Betty. Another aunt recorded in an early Edwards Family Tree their marriage occurred in Las Vegas.

Earl adopted Martha's 5 year old daughter, Doris. In 1940 they were living in East Los Angeles near his wife's aunt, Maude Griffiths. In the US Census that year, Earl's occupation is listed as brass polisher in the plumbing supply industry.

Subsequent to this I recall Earl doing maintenance work at a hospital. Since his Death Certificate lists his most recent employer as Queen of the Angels Hospital, I believe that is the hospital I recall. I do not remember the family living in East Los Angeles, but rather in Covina or West Covina in a fairly modern house. They gave us our first puppy when I was perhaps 8 years old and were friendly and loving.

My cousin, Linda, today reminded me Earl also worked as a Helm's Bakery delivery man. This was likely in the mid to late 1950's and possibly into the 1960's. Helm's trucks followed routes thru residential neighborhoods selling a variety of bakery items in the Los Angeles area. I recall glazed and jelly doughnuts being my favorites.

My cousin also mentioned Earl sold Real Estate for a time. This I did not know. She said her parents bought some land in the Mojave Desert from him.

Earl died of of a heart attack and his Death Certificate indicates he had had heart disease for about 2 years.

Earl was my paternal uncle and someone I remember fondly from family visits and Christmas gatherings. I visited his grave on 11 November 2014 and took photos with yellow spider chrysanthemums on his marker.
