Marie Ann Kolberg, 87, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died Nov. 17, 1999, in the care center. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial wll be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Marie Zahn was born Sept. 29, 1912, at Hague, the daughter of Joseph and Magdalena Zahn. She was raised on the family farm and educated in the Hague area, attending rural schools. On Dec. 27, 1939, Marie was united in marriage to John P. Kolberg at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague. After their marriage they settled in Bismarck where their eight children were born. John died suddenly on July 21, 1960, leaving Marie with six children at home; the oldest son having left to attend college, the oldest daughter attending nursing training, and the youngest child starting school as a first grader.

Marie raised her family while living in the family home in the Bismarck Cathedral district at 102 E. Ave. A for over 56 years. John and Marie were founding members of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit parish and all eight children attended Cathedral Grade School. Marie's faith was very strong and an important part of her family life. She had a special devotion to her namesake, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and to the Holy Rosary.

Marie was a master seamstress and sewed for many wedding ceremonies over the years, including the bride's gown, the bridesmaid's gowns and the outfits for the mothers. She was also skilled at many different kinds of handwork, including crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, crewel work, and quilting. During her lifetime, Marie completed over 150 afghans for her family and friends. Marie's greatest joy in life was her large flower and vegetable garden spread out over several terraces at her home on the corner of First St. and Ave. A. She greatly enjoyed sharing both fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers with her many friends, and was known throughout Bismarck for the bounty of her gardens.

In her retirement years, Marie enjoyed traveling and visited Hawaii, London and Rome. She was honored to have an audience with Pope Paul VI in Rome during her travels to Italy.

Marie was a member of Catholic Daughters, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, and Royal Neighbors of America.

Marie's family is grateful to her in-home caregiver, Gertrude Linden, and all of the kind caregivers at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.

Marie is survived by five sons and three daughters-in-law, Edward and Roberta, Sioux Falls, S.D., Harold John Kolberg, Bismarck, Roger and Barbara Kolberg, Hillsboro, Ore., Joseph Kolberg, Garrison, and Jack and Valerie Kolberg, Bismarck; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Adeline and Timothy Sandor, Superior, Wis., Dorothy and Edward Degen, Eldred, N.Y., and Jeanette Kolberg, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren, Kaarin, Morgan and Baron Kolberg, Candace and Steve Olsen, Alexander and Kathryn Sandor, Joseph Sandor, Kristin and Karyn Kolberg, Chrissy Colby, D.J.
