Verg was a lifelong resident of Geneva, where he served the community as a carpenter and homebuilder until his retirement from active business in 1978. Many homes built in this community stand as testament to his quality workmanship. He took great pride in his work and was most precise with the tape measure. Two of the last houses Verg worked on were those of Theodore Petersen and Darrel Hughes.
Vergil was married to Welcome Wilkins of Geneva on January 1, 1936. Three children blessed this home, two sons and one daughter.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and was active in supporting the Boy Scouts,from 1978 until the time of his death. In 1984 he was presented the Scouting Award of Merit.
Vergil was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mrs. Phyllis (Robert) Ackland; and a sister, Mrs. Velma (Orville) Swenson.
He is survived by his wife, Welcome, two sons, Robert of York and Fred at home in Geneva; one brother, Herbert of Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Wednesday, February 19, with the Rev. Donald F. Marsh officiating.
Mrs. Norval Lomax accompanied Delwin Myers who sang “How Great Thou Art” and “In the Garden.”
Pallbearers were grandsons, Lance, David and Raymond Reichert, Steve, Dan and Gene Ackland; and Tony Buhr.
Interment was in the Geneva public cemetery.
