HUGE THRONG GREETS MARSHALL
Prominent Retired Farmer Dies of Gun Wound
Ends Life In Despair Over Poor Health
Frank R. Marshall Is Found Dead By Family Early This Morning
Frank Ross Marshall, 77, well known retired Boone township farmer, died instantly early today of a self-inflicted gun wound. He reportedly had been despondent recently over ill-health.
Officers Robert Moe and Dale Gott, who investigated, reported that Marshall obtained a .410 gauge shot gun, belonging to his grandson, went into the bathroom, and shot himself in the roof of the mouth.
The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 3 a.m. at the home of a son, Elwin, with whom he had been residing, at 155 Napoleon street.
City police later notified Porter County Coroner H. A. Flynn, of Chesterton, who came to Valparaiso to investigate. They also called an ambulance and the body was taken to the LePell funeral home.
Police turned the gun and shell over to the coroner for examination. Coroner Flynn retained the shell, and requested the gun be turned over to the owner.
Coroner's Statement
The coroner announced that evidence indicated suicide. Later he plans to take testimony for the official records.
The decedent was born on the old Marshall homestead, southwest of Valparaiso, in Center township Dec. 22, 1870, a son of Francis and Catherine Marshall. All his life was spent in farming.
Surviving are four sons, Clinton, Michigan City; Maurice, Cleveland, O.; Elwin, Valparaiso; and Thomas, Chicago; and one daughter, Mrs. Marcella Organ, Chicago; and a number of nieces and nephews. His wife, Irene, preceded him in death six years ago.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the LePell funeral home on Monroe street, the Rev. Harvey J. Kieser, of the First Methodist church, officiating.
