NEWTON BOY KILLED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION
ELLIS NELSON DIES WHEN AUTO COLLIDES WITH HEAVY GRAIN TRUCK IN NEWTON--H.H. SPARKS WAS TRUCK DRIVER

Ellis Nelson 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Nelson of Newton, died Friday at about 10:15 p.m. in the Cache Valley hospital of injuries suffered about 9:30 p.m. when the auto he was driving collided with a heavy grain truck in Newton.

H.H. Sparks of Clarkston was driver of the loaded grain truck which collided head-on with the Nelson auto soon after the truck had turned onto the oiled road from the Trenton cut-off Deputy Sheriff Thomas J. Rowley, reported.

CAR DEMOLISHED
The Nelson auto was traveling east and the truck, west on the Smithfield-Newton highway, he said. The impact crushed the front and side of the Nelson car, demolishing the vehicle. The victim was crushed against the dashboard of the auto and suffered a skull fracture, broken ribs and other injuries. He never regained consciousness.

Riding with young Nelson at the time of the accident were LaMar Nebeker, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Nebeker of Newton and Morris Griffin, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Griffin of Newton.

After the accident, the victims were picked up by Quentin Barker of Newton, who carried them as far as the Hyde Park lane on Highway 91 when his tire blew out. He hailed Nagel Palmer, of 567 North 1st East, Logan, who brought Nebeker and Griffin to Logan and sent the Logan-Cache ambulance to bring Nelson to the hospital. They were treated at the Cache Valley hospital for severe face lacerations, bruises and possible other injuries. Young Nebeker was released from the hospital about 11 p.m. and told investigating officers that the truck was traveling with only one light.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT
Ellis Nelson was born on February 26, 1926 in Newton, the son of Eugene and Christena Hogenson Nelson.

The victim was an outstanding student at the North Cache High School and would have been a junior student there this year. He was president of the sophomore class last year. He was also active in church and scout work in the Newton ward.

Surviving are his parents and the following brothers and sisters: Merlin Nelson, and Mrs. Sidney Hansen of Newton; Mrs. Lex Lewis of Logan; Mrs. W.R. Smart and Mrs. Erma Hall of Afton, Wyoming; Mrs. Gilbert Kandt, Mrs. Gordon Cowan and Mrs. Ariel Griffin all of Salt Lake City. Another brother, Blaine Nelson, left Thursday for California as a member of the Second Marine "Mormon Battalion."

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Lindquist and Sons Mortuary.
