Leo R. Alvarez came to the United States at the age of 3. He came on a ship with his mother, Josefa and two older brothers, Manuel and Philip arriving on Ellis Island. His name is displayed on a wall there. Leo's father Herman arrived earlier traveling first from Spain aboard the ship the Mexico to New York. Herman and Josefa had two more children Mary and Joseph born in the United States. Leo married Miriam Berberick in Tuxedo, New York. The Alvarez's settled in Jersey City, New Jersey. Leo is survived by three lovely daughters, Patricia, Carol, and Leona. He has 9 grandchildren, and the great-grandchildren list is growing. The Alvarez family lived on Virgina Avenue in Jersey City occupying the first floor. The second floor was occupied by the Lynch Family (Leo's sister Mary's).Leo was an diesel mechanic by trade. He spent a great deal of time devoted to the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic Men Organization. Leo helped start many of the Spanish speaking Councils of the Knights of Columbus in the State of New Jersey. Leo was also a Democratic Committeeman and helped start neighborhood watches. He was honored by the City of Jersey City with a plaque and write up. Leo suffered from Heart trouble and Cancer. He is here with his wife. His parents, brother Philip, and sister Mary and her husband Joseph Lynch are buried elsewhere within the cemetery.
