Herman is my great grandfather. He came over from Spain on the ship "Mexico" leaving the Port of Bordeaux Corsque and Vigo and landing in New York on July 5, 1913. He was 34 years old. He left my great grandmother in Spain with two small boys and one on the way looking for a better life for them. He sent for them in a few years and they were reunited.
Herman served in the military in Spain for 12 years. He comes from Asturias which is the Northwestern part of Spain. At the time of his immigration the area in Spain was undergoing change. The town of Meres was a huge coal mining area and the mine was being shut down. People were being asked to farm the land. That area of Spain has lots of farmland, but it gets very cold. Many left the area looking for employment.
Herman's wife Josefa came over after he was settled in New Jersey. She came over by ship with three sons: Manuel, Philip, and Leo. They landed in Ellis Island and some of their names can be found on the memory walls there.
Two other children were born in the United States: Joseph and Mary. Mary is buried here with her parents, brother, and husband Joseph Lynch.
My grandfather said that his dad spoke mostly Spanish. He was known as a practical joker and a man full of energy and laughter.
