Josefa is my great grandmother. She comes from Asturias, a region in the Northwestern part of Spain. Her Husband Herman came over prior to her departing with three young boys: Manuel, Phillip, and Leo.
Josefa was known as being able to keep the boys in line. She didn't let them get away with anything. My grandmother and other relatives said she would take the woman's side especially when the boys were wrong. They all respected her.
Josefa lived with her daughter Mary for many years before she passed away. She was watched after closely by all her children. There were always children over there and the grandchildren and some great grandchildren have fond memories of her.
My great grandmother had a natural talent for knitting. She didn't like crocheting. There were two ways to knit the right way and the wrong way. Walla as we called her would pull you over to her measure you up and within a few days you would have a beautiful sweater.
Josefa, Mary and Miriam her daughter in law were often found sitting on the front porch knitting during the summer. I remember spending many days of my early life with them playing with neighborhood children and later learning their craft.
