Funeral Services Held at Sacred
Heart Church Here Tuesday

One of Hickman's best known characters, "Uncle" Steve Stahr, died at Fancy Farm early Monday morning as the result of a stroke of paralysis he suffered nearly a month ago.

"Uncle Steve" as he was affectionately known throughout West Kentucky, was one of the largest land owners in this section. He had extensive holdings in Fulton, Hickman and Graves counties, Kentucky, in Missouri and in Florida. He owned a large part of Wolf Island.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic church here, of which he was a lifelong member, at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, by Father F. J. Gettelfinger, the pastor, with a large crowd in attendance.

Many lovely floral tributes were received. Interment followed in the City cemetery. The honorary pall bearers were Judge W. J. McMurry, W. A. Johnston, D. L. McNeill, W. S. Swift, B. W. Posey and Goalder Johnson. The active pall bearers were C. F. Stahr, E. J. Stahr, Bernard Mangold, Joseph Werner, Charlie Lattus and J. A. Lattus.

Stephen S. Stahr was born at Jacksonburg, Indiana December 27, 1859, the son of Jacob and Augusta Stahr. He moved to Hickman with his family at the age of four and had resided in this community ever since –- a total of nearly 70 years. The family lived on the old Stahr home place near Combs Springs.

He was married to Miss Emma Davis in 1887. To this union seven children were born, three dying in infancy. He is survived by his widow, four sons –- Jack, Roland, Charlie A. and Paul Stahr; one brother W. A. Stahr of Fancy Farm, two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Mangold and Mrs. Mary Werner, both of this community, as well as nephew and nieces and other relatives.

"Uncle Steve" was long identified with the business interests of Hickman. He conducted a levry stable for many years. As he accumulated wealth he bought land and more land. He was a self made man and until the day of his death remained plain, unassuming and unpretentious. He was known far and wide and had a host of friends, who join the family in mourning his loss.
