_____
Death came with comparative suddenness to Mrs. Maggie Lattus Mangold, 82, who passed away at 8:45 Sunday morning at Haws hospital in Fulton following a paralytic stroke which occurred Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wilfred Kaufman, where she had lived for several years.
Solemn requiem high mass was held Tuesday morning at 8:45 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of which she was a devout member.
Fr. Clarence Pettit, local rector, was celebrant, Fr. Robert Wiley of Union City acted as deacon and Fr. Martin Mattingly, assistant rector here, was sub deacon. Servers were the following grandsons of the deceased; Louis, Lawrence and Frank Lattus, Vincent Kaufman, Chris and George Mangold.
Pallbearers included the following grandsons: Raymond Kaufman, John B. Lattus, Joe Daniel Lattus, Charles Lattus, Herman and Frederick Lattus.
Interment was in the city cemetery with Barrett's in charge of arrangements.
Those from a distance attending the rites were Charles H. McNeill and W. A. Mangold of Louisville, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Youree and Herman Lattus of Detroit, Frederick Lattus of Norfolk, Va., Miss Louise Kaufman of Cincinnati, Ohio, B. B. Mangold of Fort Knox, Ky., Walter Brice and A. B. Brice of East Prairie, Mo., Mrs. W. C. Daughter of Jacob and Augusta Shively Stahr, the deceased was born in Indiana. While she was a very small child the family came to Hickman and she spent the remainder of her life here.
She was first married to John Benjamin Lattus, who died in 1900. Five children survive this union, as follows: J. A. Lattus, Mrs. Katie McNeill, Mrs. Wilfred Kaufman, John H. and Charles A. Lattus all of Hickman. Another son, Ben Lattus, died in August 1948.
She later was married to Henry Mangold, husband of her deceased sister, and assisted him in the rearing of his five children, four of whom survive, namely: George B. and Phillip Mangold and Mrs. Leo Cissell of Hickman and W. A. Mangold of Louisville.
They were blessed with one son of their own, Raymond Mangold, who was drowned in May 1935. In December of the same year, Mr. Mangold died.
Besides her five children and four step-children, Mrs. Mangold leaves 30 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mary Werner of Hickman.
Mrs. Mangold was a deeply religious, prayerful woman who placed her church first in her life. Essentially a home-body, she was never happier than when serving and caring for her family, to whom her devotion was untiring. She was of a retiring disposition and while she seemed a bit aloof to some persons, she was "salt of the earth" to those who knew her best.
