The 1920 Census placed the family in Mason, Cerro Gordo Co., Iowa. Phil Butts, aged 23, was working as a butcher in a packing house. Mildred, aged 24, was home with 2-year-old Lloyd.
By the time the 1930 Census came around, the family had relocated to Elkhart, Elkhart Co., Indiana. Phil Butts, aged 34, was noted as a laborer in a bag factory. Mildred, aged 35, was home with Lloyd, aged 13, Helene, aged 10, and 7-year-old Arden.
Just before the next decade’s census, Lloyd married Clara Annabelle Maropke on 17 Jun 1939 in Michigan City, La Porte Co., Indiana.
In 1940, the newlyweds were living in Michigan City. Head of household was Lloyd’s father Phil Butts, aged 44 and working as a groundman for NIPSCO (I think). Lloyd’s mother Mildred, aged 45, was still ruling the roost. All of her children were still living at home—Helene, aged 20, Arden, aged 17 and working as a helper in a garage, and Lloyd, aged 23 and employed as a sewing machine salesman. Wife Annabelle, aged 19, was there to lend a pair of extra hands to Mildred.
A year and a month after they wed, Lloyd and Annabelle welcomed son Jack on 10 Jul 1940. Jack would marry Ann Elaine Swihart on 9 Feb 1963.
Lloyd’s father died the day before the 4th of July on 3 Jul 1960 at age 64. Lloyd’s mother lived another 26 years without him, passing into the light on 29 Apr 1986, aged 91.
