Mary Catherine Strain is the daughter of Andrew Strain, Jr. (1791-1871) and Nancy Kidd (1799-1887). Mary was named for both her grandmothers, Mary Strain, and Catherine Kidd. Her exact date of death has not been found. She died between 1912 and 1916. She married Noah Ferguson (1819-bet 1880-1900) about 1840 in North Carolina or South Carolina. Her grave is not marked, but it is believed she is buried in the family lot with her husband, brother-in-law, William Williams, and sister, Margaret Amanda Strain Williams in West Hill Cemetery, Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia.

A letter written by her youngest sister, Nancy Adaline Strain Stephens, on September 29, 1912, described her sister Mary as not being well. It was thought she died soon thereafter until the following obituary was discovered.

CITY'S OLDEST RESIDENT IS CLAIMED BY DEATH
Mrs. Mary Katherine Ferguson Died Here Monday
Mrs. Mary Katherine Ferguson, aged 93 years, probably the oldest resident of Dalton, died Monday, at the home of her grandchildren, Mr. Clifford S. Cary and sisters, after a long illness.
Mrs. Ferguson was born December 9, 1821, in Lincoln, N. C.., where, at an early age, she affiliated with the Baptist church. For years she was an ardent church worker, assisting her husband, who was a revival singer. Her entire life was devoted to the church and its cause, for she was an earnest Christian woman. She later moved to Georgia, and came to this city to live in 1872, moving here from Hill City, Gordon County.
The funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the residence by Rev. O. D. Fleming, pastor of the First Baptist Church, interment being made in West View cemetery.
Mrs. Ferguson is survived by one son, W. A. Ferguson, of Chattanooga; six grandchildren, Mrs. Kate Carey Oxford, Mrs. W. F. Manning, Miss Etna Carey and Mr. C. S. Carey, of this city, and Miss Elmo Ferguson and Mr. George Ferguson, of Chattanooga and one sister, Mrs. Wilie Stephens, of Adairsville.
Among the out-of-town relatives here for the funeral were W. A. and George Ferguson, of Chattanooga; Mr. and Mrs. Wilie Stephens and daughters, Misses Rilla and Christine Stephens, of Adiarsville; Mr. J. A. Strain and two daughters and Mr. Dan Strain, of Calhoun, and Mr. Charles Strain, of Hill City.
