David was a cabinet maker and the son of Andrew DeBusk and Mary "Polly" Courtney. He was one of 11 children.

David was the husband of Winnie Eliza Nichols (b. abt. 1843 in Mt. Airy, Surry County, NC).

David and Eliza married in Washington County, Virginia on Mar. 11, 1858.

Eliza was the daughter of Edmond Nichols (1817-1904) and Jestine Parker (1821-1904), who married on Sept. 8, 1839.

David enlisted in the Confederate Army on Aug. 20, 1861 as a private in the 37th Regiment Virginia Infantry, Company F.

David and Eliza had nine children per the 1880 Census:

Robert Strother - was a teacher.

Alexander Campbell - was a farmer.

George Washington - was a cabinet maker.

Virginia Jennie - married John Andrew Widener (b. 1863) on Apr. 2, 1884.

John E. (born abt. 1868).

Margaret Matilda - married Lewis Jefferson Walden.

Ida May - married William C. Ourt.

Ann Eliza (born abt. 1875).

William Mansfield - was in the Spanish American War.

Mary S. (born May, 1881) - married John R. Crouch on May 8, 1898 in Indiana.
