On September 28, 1852, he wed Massie S. C. Roundtree. He was a Confederate soldier, survived the War, and died after 1911. He is mentioned in Salley's book as being in Company A, First (Hagood's) S.C.V. (1861-1862). Dr. Landrum in his book says that he was a member of Company H, rather than A, and that he was a Battalion 2nd Lieutenant. There is also a "Wiley W. Lanford" mentioned in connection with Company K, 5th S.C.V., a "Wiley W. D. Lanford" mentioned in connection with Company C, 22nd S.C.V., a "William W. D. Lanford" mentioned in connection with Company D, 1st S.C. Arty, and a "W. W. D. Lanford" mentioned as Sergeant and also Battalion Second Lieutenant of Company H, 1st (Hagood's) S.C.V.

It is impossible to be certain, but it may be that he is the W. D. Lanford who is referred to as a Poll Manager for the Hebron Polling Place for the 1862 Election of Spartanburg District. He is also probably to be identified with the W. W. D. Lanford, who, at age 40, was listed in the 1869 Spartanburg County Militia Enrollment List.

The date of his death has not been learned, nor has the site of his burial been discovered.

It is believed that there was only one child, a girl, Clara Lanford, who was born about 1853. It is believed that she moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1869, and that, in that same year, she married H. D. Brewton. According to an obituary printed in the April 7, 1880 issue of The Carolina Spartan, she, at age 27, died in Knoxville on March 21, 1880. According to that obituary, her illness was brief and she left five little children; four sons and a daughter (not named).
