He was born in Spartanburg County, son of William Lanford and Jane Leatherwood. Between 1855 and 1858 they lived in the Gowensville area. Later they were members at Philadelphia Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon. Still later, 1874, they were received at Antioch Baptist Church, Enoree. He was removed from the Antioch church membership roll, by reason of death, no notation of date; however, his death must have been between December 5, 1874 and May, 1878. Because of this notation in the Antioch records, it is assumed that he was buried in an unmarked grave at Antioch Baptist Church; however, no marked stone has been found.

It is understood that they had ten children, as follows: (1)Wiley William Dean Lanford, (2) Emily Frances Lanford Rowntree, (3) Thomas Pinkney Lanford, (4) Hosea Jefferson Lanford, (5) Robert Daniel Lanford, (6) Mary Ellen Dean Lanford Dodd, (7) Elizabeth E. Lanford Lister, (8) John L. Lanford, (9) Lucy Lanford (infant), and (10) Jane D. (Nettie) Lanford Lister.
