He was a Confederate soldier, some reports say McBeth's Light Artillery, others Boyce's Company. His exact date of death has not been learned, but there is an obituary in the January 11, 1904 issue of The Spartanburg Journal. It states that he was buried in Oakwood; however no stone has been found. Nevertheless, attention is invited to Page 1 of Volume 3 of the Spartanburg Cemetery Survey; there is a note concerning Plot 1: "No owner, no graves, road covers most of this plot". Since Mrs. Lanford was probably buried in Plot No 2, it seems a fair inference that her husband Robert was buried in Plot No. 1, but that the road now covers most of this plot.
