Ferdinand Paustian, one of the oldest citizens of Mayville, having reached the very rare old age of over 90 years, passed away in death on Sunday morning at 5:30. For over half a century he was a resident of Mayville, built up a flourishing industry, and in many ways aided our city in its growth and improvement.

Mr. Paustian was born March 27, 1831 at Alt Lewin, Brandenburg, Germany, where he grew to manhood. In 1857 he came to America and was married three years later at Watertown to Miss Sophia Roll, who had come to this country two years before. For five years they resided at Hustisford, then came to Mayville where they spent the remainder of their long, busy lifes. Here Mr. Paustian and two others purchased the mill property and water rights from the Fosters and for years they operated also a saw mill. They cut up trees to clear away the surrounding forests so as to make room for Mayville, and thus created lumber for the village to grow into a city.

In 1868 Mr. Paustian built his fine home on the east bank of Rock river, near the new park. He retained many fine trees about the place, which presents a fine view from the opposite shore, with just a glimpse of the residence within. Later he purchased the mill property for himself and his son; he planned and erected a grist mill, and later added the electric light and power plant, after which he sold out to the Northwestern Iron Co.

March 25, 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Paustian celebrated their golden wedding, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. Mrs. Paustian's health was even then not of the best and old age continued to sap her strength until her death, six years ago. Thus her husband had to continue his journey to the century mark alone, but he too was overcome by the afflictions of old age. Of their children two died in Hustisford and one here, at a tender age. The five surviving are a son, Albert, now at Brillion, Martha, Mrs. Oswald Liebscher at Thiensville, Paula, Mrs. Oscar Naber of here, and the Misses Anna and Clara at home, who to the last surrounded their parents with care and affection. There are also eight grandchildren mourning the death of the grandfather.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from the late home to Graceland cemetery. Mr. Henry Loewenfeld delivered the eulogy and members of the Mayville Maennerchor rendered fine selections at the home and graveside.

The mourning relatives have our sincere sympathy.
