Bernard Anderson was born on October 22, 1923, in Galveston, Texas. At the age of 17, he got his mother's permission to enlist in the US Navy on the eve of World War II. He served at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1942-43 but was transferred to the Brooklyn Navy Yard in NY by 1944. While there, he had a wartime romance with Eileen Hitchings that resulted in a daughter, Anna Mae, who died in infancy. He was later assigned to the USS Missouri where he was present for the signing of the Japanese surrender that ended World War II.

After the war, he returned to Galveston where he met and married Jessie Ellen Horn, with whom he had two children, Bernadette and Bernard, Jr. The family new moved to be near his wife's family in Farmington, New Mexico in the early 1950s but later divorced. Jessie got custody of the children, remarried, and the two children were adopted by their step father Merle Holloway.

After his divorce, Bernard returned to Galveston where he joined his brother Herbert in commercial fishing work during the 1960s. He also worked as a carpenter and painter in the 1970s. After retiring in the late 1980s, he resided with his sister Anna Mae Strain. He died in Galveston on February 28, 2009 at the age of 85 and was buried in the Veterans Administration Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
