Doughty grew up near Sinton and moved to east Texas to work in the oil fields in the 1920's for a few years. Then he went to Venezuela working for Gulf Oil until the late 1950's. He returned to Texas and lived in Cleveland until his death. He met and wed Aline in Venezuela. They had no children.
