Rensselaer Man Killed In Crash
RENSSELAER--A drive home from work early Sunday ended in death for Dale LaVern Ames, 41, of 115 Thompson St.
State Police report Ames was returning from his job as a night guard at the U.S. Steel Co. plant in Gary shortly after 7 a.m. when he apparently fell asleep. The car went out of control on U.S. 231, 1 1/2 miles north of Rensselaer, and slammed into a utility pole.
Ames was taken to Jasper County Hospital where he died at 8 a.m. of a crushed chest. Officials say he also suffered internal injuries and a broken leg.
He was born in Newton Township, Jasper County, and married Louise George in 1946. He was a lifetime resident of Rensselaer, and graduated from the high school here in 1941. Mr. Ames was an outstanding athlete.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy three years.
Surviving with the widow are four sons, Robert, Rex, Roger and Danny, all at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ames of Rt. 3, Rensselaer; and two brothers, DeVere and Richard Ames of Rt. 3, Rensselaer.
