James Nestor Alseth, age 91, of Spring Valley, died Saturday, June 11, 2011, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center.

Jim was born April 19, 1920, the son of Ben and Sophie (Dragseth) Alseth in Menomonie. He attended Dunn County Aggie School and graduated in 1939. After school he worked for Oliver Howe at Menomonie. On Dec. 9, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his bravery in action.

On June 10, 1949, Jim married Mary Lou Halvorson. They had three daughters, Jean, Janet and and Nancy. Mary Lou died several years later.

In addition to farming, Jim worked for the Brick Yard in Menomonie and later at the Post Office, retiring in 1983.

On July 26, 1986, he married Barbara (Ofstie) Wang at the Congregational Church in Spring Valley.

Jim was proud of his service in the Army and was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Menomonie Veteran's Honor Guard.

Jim was a long time member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) Eau Claire, Wisconsin Chapter 0371.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife; and one brother, Helmer.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of Spring Valley; three daughters, Jean (Charles) Price of Menomonie, Janet (Steve) Dean of Charlevoix, Mich., and Nancy Beghun of Menomonie; four step-children, Brian (Gay) Wang of Spring Valley, Elwyn (Barb) Wang of St. Paul, Minn., Valerie (Scott) Berends of Spring Valley, and Denise Jenson; one sister, Bernice Klatt of Glenwood City; one brother, Bob (Irene) Alseth of Washington; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Spring Valley with Rev. Jeff Holton officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Music will be provided by organist Gloria Weghorn and vocalist Jae Anderson. Burial will be in Halvorson Cemetery, Menomonie.
