She was born on Sept. 20, 1921, in the Township of Menomonie to Ben and Sophie (Dragseth) Alseth. She attended the Evergreen Valley School and graduated from Menomonie High School.
Bernice married Paul H. Klatt on Oct. 24, 1942, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menomonie. They settled on a dairy farm in the Dunn County Township of Stanton.
Bernice enjoyed traveling and took many bus tours of the country and also traveled to France to visit the gravesite of her brother, Helmer, who was killed in the invasion of Europe during World War II.
Bernice was a member of the local Homemakers Club and worked for many years at the Menomonie Farmers Credit Union as Executive Secretary, and was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Menomonie.
After retiring, they moved to an apartment in Menomonie, and in 2008 Bernice moved to Havenwood Assisted Living in Glenwood City; and then, as her health failed, she moved into Glenhaven.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Klatt, on Feb. 28, 2007; two brothers, James and Helmer Alseth; and infant son, Kenneth.
Bernice is survived by a daughter, Paula Jean (Carlton) DeWitt of Glenwood City; two sons, Allen (Paulette) Klatt of Titusville, Fla., and Donald (Missy) Klatt of Downing; six grandchildren, Shawn (Patti Kosmosky) DeWitt of Glenwood City, Alex (Kris) DeWitt of Stoughton, Joel (Stacia) DeWitt of Little Rock, Ark., Dr. Erin (Bill) Burns of Indianapolis, Ind., Jenny (Dan) Mechtel of Bloomington, Minn., and Corey Klatt of Downing. She is also survived by nine great-grand children, Krisha DeWitt, Ross DeWitt, Austin DeWitt, Tyler DeWitt, Lydia Frank, Emma DeWitt, Ryan Burns, Abby Burns and Zachariah DeWitt; one brother, Robert (Irene) Alseth of Yakima, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Doris Klatt of Menomonie and Barb Alseth of Spring Valley; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1100 Ninth St., Menomonie, on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Brett Voigt officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at St. Paul's Cemetery in Menomonie immediately following the service.
