Lila Maxine Ambers was born June 6, 1929, on the family farm near Hamberg, ND, the daughter of Lewis and Olga (Simonson) Ambers. She grew up speaking Norwegian and learned English. She attended country school in Wells County, North Dakota, and attended Benson County Ag School, Maddock, ND. She was baptized and confirmed at Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock.
She married Hilding Alfstad on May 1, 1950, in Fessenden, ND. They lived and farmed on the family farm in Walhalla Township in Wells County. He died Oct. 31, 1996. She moved to Westview Apartments, New Rockford, in 2003 and to Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in May 2004. She was a member of Eden Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, and Eden Ladies Aid. She enjoyed reading, watching country western movies and making lefse.
She is survived by a daughter, Della (Ray) Rudolph, Wimbledon, ND; a son, Dan (Joan), Sheyenne, ND; three brothers, Kenneth (Valerie), Cheshire, Ore., and Judal (Pam) and Alvern, both Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Clarice Fossen, Vancouver; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter, Rebecca; her parents; four brothers, Lester, Roy, Stanton and Lawrence; and two sisters, Vionne and Alvina.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Grandfield Lutheran Church, Sheyenne, with the Rev. Sharron Lucas officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Sunday, Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial: Eden Lutheran Cemetery, rural Sheyenne (Bremen), North Dakota.
