Services for Russell "Stogie" Anderson Austin, 81, of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Westwood Evangelical Church in Lubbock.
Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery in Slaton under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock.
He died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003.
He was born May 12, 1921, in O'Brien. He married Yvonne Campbell on Nov. 30, 1940, in Clovis, N.M. He was a lifetime resident of Lubbock. His family brought the first railroad ties to Lubbock. He was a Baptist.
He owned and was a salesman for Austin Sporting Goods in Lubbock. He was a salesman for World Sporting Goods. He drove a bus for TNMO for 28 years. While working for TNMO, he drove for the Lubbock Hubbers Baseball Team and Monterey Plainsmen from 1955 to 1971.
He co-founded West Texas Coaching Clinics and was an innovator in the sporting goods field. He invented and patented the Austin Football Shoulder Pad in 1966, and invented and manufactured a leg-drive weight machine.
Mr. Austin was preceded in death by his parents, W. Anderson Austin and Nellie Partin Austin. five brothers, C. P. Austin, Alvie Austin, Cecil Austin, B. T. Austin and W. George Austin. and two sisters, Viola Walker and Serena Johnston.
Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Rohrer of Lubbock and Amelia Russ of Denton; two sons, James of Corpus Christi and Jerry of Lubbock; three sisters, Margaret Watts of Phoenix, Ariz., Emma Powell of Levelland and Meretta Houlette of El Paso, N.M.; five brothers, W.A. of Sugarland, Partin of Osceola, Mo., Guy of Farwell, Donal of Lubbock and Donis of Houston
