Johannes Alberts Groen (= Green) was born in September 1839 in the dairy farmers village of Oldetrijne, located in the southern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, son of Albert Johannes Groen (28 years old, laborer) and Lijsbert Hendriks Haven (= Harbor), named after his grandfather Johannes Alberts (Groen), farmer, who lived 1784-1859 in the southern part of the Dutch province Friesland (too).

Johannes Alberts Groen was in 1858 eliminated by lottery for doing military service in the Dutch army for five years.

In April 1893 Johannes Groen (53, farmer), his wife, six children, and his daughter Margje's husband Johannes van der Tuin, emigrated from the dairy farmers village Oldetrijne in south Friesland to the Platte area, Charles Mix County, located in the southeastern part of South Dakota, not far away from the Missouri River. On April 7, 1893 they arrived on the s.s. Veendam at the port of New York, Ellis Island.

In June 1900 Johannes Groen (61 years old, born in September 1839 in the Netherlands, farmer), his wife Hankje (58, March 1842, Netherlands, mother of 7 living children), their children Jochem (24, June 1876, Netherlands, farm laborer), Feike (20, Mei 1880, Netherlands, farm laborer) and Reinder (17, Netherlands, October 1882, farm laborer) were living on a rented farm in Signal Township, which borders the River Missouri, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. They all immigrated in 1893.

In April 1910 Johannes A Groen (70) and his wife Hankje (68) were living in their own house in Platte Township, Charles Mix County, South Dakota.

In January 1920 John Groen (80) and his wife Hattie (78) were still living in their own house in Platte Township, Charles Mix County, South Dakota.

His wife Hankje died in January 1923 at the age of 80 years in Platte Colony, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. Widower Johannes Groen died there too, in May 1925 at the age of 85 years.
