In April 1893 Albert emigrated with his parents and siblings from the dairy farmers village Oldetrijne in the southern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland to the Platte area in Charles Mix County, located in the southeastern part of South Dakota.
In the beginning Albert worked there for a cement contractor. In 1896 Albert and some of his brothers and sisters went to northwest Iowa to work for others on farms. They returned to their parental home in Charles Mix County again.
On 13 February 1899 Albert married at Nieveen, near Platte, both Dutch settlements, to Zwaantje Zijlstra, who was born in the Dutch northern province Friesland too.
In June 1900 Albert Groen (29 y, born in February 1871 in the Netherlands, farmer) and his wife Zwaantje (30, May 1870, Netherlands) were living at a rented farm in Signal Township near Platte.
In 1904 and 1906 they had two daughters, Anna and Gertrude (Gertie) Groen. The couple lived on a rented farm until 1907, when they purchased a home 5 miles north and 1/2 mile west of Platte, in Forbes Township.
In April 1910 Albert Groen (39), his wife Zwaantje (39), their daughters Anna (5, South Dakota) and Gertie (4, South Dakota) were living at their own farm in Forbes Township, Charles Mix, South Dakota.
In January 1920 Albert J Groen (48, immigrated in 1893), his wife Zwaantje (49, immigrated in 1885), and their daughters Anna (15) and Gertrude (13) were still living at their farm in Forbes Township, Charles Mix, South Dakota.
Between January and June 1920 the family moved to Hull, Sioux County, located in the northwestern part of Iowa, where his wife Zwaantje Zijlstra died soon after arriving, on May 17, 1920, at the age of almost 50 years.
In 1924 Albert remarried Hilda Los, maiden name Hillegonda Kranenburg, since April 1921 widow of Peter Los. She also preceded him in death, on June 5, 1935. Hilda and Peter Los were buried in Minnesota.
In 1936 Albert moved to Platte once more, where he made home with his sister Elizabeth Groen Oldekamp, since 1930 widow too, for nearly 25 years.
In April 1940 Albert Groen (69 y, without an occupation, single [!]) lived in Platte, Charles Mix County, South Dakota at the farm of and with his sister Elizabeth Oldekamp (71 y, head of the household, widow) and her daughter Elizabeth Oldekamp (21 y, servant at a private home). In 1935 Elizabeth and her daughter Elizabeth lived in the same house, Albert on a rural place in Iowa.
Albert died in 1963 at the age of 92 years at the home of his daughter in Hull, Iowa.

He was married to Mrs. Hilda Los in 1924 and she also preceded him in death.
Left a widower again, he moved to Platte to make his home with a sister. He spent nearly twenty-five years here. He took an active part in the life of the church and affairs of the community. When this home was dissolved, through illness of his sister he came to the Sioux Center Nursing Wing. But after afew months and until the time of his death he had made his home with a daughter in Hull.
He was a faithful member of the Christian Reformed Church and had the welfare of God's Kingdom at heart. He often served as elder, here and at Platte and often as clerk of that council. He was elected twice to the Synod of his church.
He leaves to mourn his daughters: Mrs. Anna Faber of Hull, and Mrs. Nick Feikema (Gertrude) of Sibley (Iowa). Four grandchildren: August Faber of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Allan of Hull, Wanda of Los Angeles, California and Bob at home. Three great-grandchildren also survive besides many relatives and friends.
